Dear Future Pilot:

Welcome to Sanford Air and your introduction to flying.  In this information sheet, we hope to answer the most commonly asked questions and explain what we do.  The most important thing we would like like to state is all it takes to learn to fly is desire. There is no black magic involved and your instructors will lend all assistance necessary to ensure your success as a pilot.

The opening phase of your flight instruction will cover an introduction to the aircraft and its systems and the basic flight maneuvers such as as straight and level flight, turns, climbs and descents.  The flight training will be given in conjunction with home study using your text book and the use of video tapes in the briefing room.  All your training is integrated in what is known as the Jeppesen Guided Flight Discovery training program.  You will progress to more advanced maneuvers, airport traffic patterns, normal and crosswind takeoffs and landings, and emergency procedures.  When you have mastered the required maneuvers, taken an in-house open book test, and have received a flight physical, you will be qualified to "solo" locally.  On solo flights, you will fly the airplane by yourself under the guidance of your flight instructor.

The next phase of your training covers preparation for cross-country flights.  This will include weather analysis, aircraft performance, navigation, and control tower operations.  Cross-country flights will be made to airports such as Rockland, Augusta, Lebanon, Manchester and others.  When you are comfortable with these trips, you will be allowed to fly trips solo.  You will take a computer based knowledge test consisting of 60 questions.  The materials required to prepare for this exam are included in your student kit.

The last phase of your training is basically the "wrap-up".  There will be flight test preparation, and a general review of the flight maneuvers you have learned.  You will then take the practical flight test with an FAA designated examiner.

Once you receive your pilot's license, you will be able to fly passengers.  Your pilots license is valid throughout the world, and you may enjoy your flying privileges well into your advanced years.  You may continue on to additional ratings to improve your skills as a pilot or enjoy the freedom of flight as a private pilot.

Please feel free to ask any questions that come to mind, and let us show you our facilities.  When you decide to learn to fly, you will set your own pace and schedule.  Learning to fly can be one of the greatest experiences of your life.

    Warm Regards,

      Don Martel
      Chief Pilot & Flight Instructor
