Frequently Asked Questions: Q. Who qualifies to get a refund? A. Anyone who has bought fuel, in the state of Maine, for a piston powered aircraft. Q. What fuel can I get a refund on? A. Any qualifying fuel (fuel for a piston powered airplane) that was purchased in the State of Maine. Q. What about turbine powered aircraft? A. You guys make out even better. You don't get charged the excess tax in the first place. Q. How much money do I get back? A. You get all but four cents of tax back... that comes to 18 cents according to my math. :-) Q. Is there a time limit for filing a claim? A. According to the form, you need to submit your paperwork within 12 months of the fuel purchase. This might be a way of making April 15th a little less painful. :-) Q. What supporting documentation do I need? A. You need to attach the original invoices, or a statement certifying that the invoices are paid. The supporting documentation will not be returned to you, so you should make copies before you submit them. Q. What should I spend my refund money on? A. Flying. What else?

The State of Maine has your money!

The State of Maine collects 22-cents a gallons of fuel tax. However, Title 36, Chapter 451 contains an exception for piston powered aircraft, but there's a catch. You need to file for a refund, and you need to do so within a year of you fuel purchase.

All you need to do is fill out a "Refund Application, Aeronautical Fuel", and send it to the Maine Revenue Service.
